INTRODUCTION 
THE subject matter of the following work is announced 
in the explanatory title, Ein Kaiser und Heldenbild 
aus der Neuzeit, der deutschen Jugend gewidmet. 
The author is Karl Zastrow, who also writes under the 
pseudonym of Karl von Prenzlau. He was born in 
1836 at Prenzlau and lives now in Berlin. A number 
f volumes have appeared from his pen, which bave a 
good reputation in Germany, well deserved and well 
sustained since 1861 when his first work Traum und 
Leben appeared. The majority of his productions are 
tspecially intended for the roung and for the people, 
such as Aus der Märchenwelt (18362), Ernst und 
Scherz für Kinderherz (1863). A number of hbis 
stories are inspired by American experiences, e.g 
Wald und Prairie (1867), Diesseits und jenseits 
des Oceans (1865), Die Auswanderer (187o); some 
bear on the English colonies, as Engländer und Indier 
(1873); others on military life: Major Kreuzschnabel
