Article  171.
L’iemploi  des  gaz  asphyxiants,  toxiques  ou  simiires,
  ainsi  que  de  tous  liquides,  matières  ou  procédés
  analogues,  Stant  prohibé,  la  fabrication  et
T’importation  en  sont  rigoureusement  interdites  en.
Allemagne.

II  en  est  de  méme  du  matériel  spécialement  destiné
  à  la  fabrication,  à  la  Conservation  ou  à  P’usage
desdits  produits  ou  procédés.

Sont  également  prchibéees  la  fabrication  et  l'importation
  en  Allemagne  des  chars  blindés,  tanks
ou  de  tout  autre  engin  similaire  pouvant  servir  à
des  buts  de  guerre.

Article  172.

Dans  un  délai  de  trois  mois  à  dater  de  la  mise
en  vigueur  du  présent  Traité,  le  Gouvernement  allemand
  fera  connaitre  aux  Gouvernements  des  Principales
  Puissances  alliées  et  associées  la  nature  et
le  mode  de  fabrication  de  tous  les  explosifs,  substances
  toxiques  ou  autres  Préparations  chimiques,
utilisés  par  lui  au  cours  de  la  guerre,  ou  préparés
par  lui  dans  le  but  de  les  utiliser  ainsi.

CHAPTTRE  III.
RECRUTENENT  ET  INSTRUCTION  MLTAIRE.

Article  173.

Tout  service  militaire  universel  obligatoire  sera
aboli  en  Allemagne.

L'armée  allemande  ne  pourra  éetre  constituée  et
recrutéee  due  par  voie  d’engagements  volontaires.

Article  174.
L'’engagement  des  sous-officiers  et  soldats  devra
ẽtre  de  douze  annG6es  continues.

La  proportion  des  hommes  quittant  le  service
Pour  qduelque  cause  que  ce  soit  avant  Texpiration
du  terme  de  leur  engagement  ne  devra  pas  dépasser,
  chaque  année,  cind  pour  cent  de  la  Ptahte  des
effectifs  fixés  par  le  présent  Traité  (article  160,
1“,  alinéa  2).

Article  175.

Les  officiers  qui  seront  maintenus  dans  PFarmée
devront  contracter  Pengagement  d’y  servir  au
moins  jusqu'a  äge  de  duarante-cind  ans.

Les  officiers  nouvellement  nommés  devront  contracter
  Pengagement  de  servir  effectivement  au
moins  pendant  vingt-cind  années  continues.

Les  officiers  qui  ont  Précédemment  appartenu
à  des  formations  quelconques  de  Tarmée  et  qui  ne
seront  pas  conservés  dans  les  unités  dont  le  maintien
  est  autorisé  ne  devront  participer  à  aucun
exercice  militaire  théorique  ou  pratique  et  ne  seront
soumis  à  aucune  obligation  militaire  quelconque.

Article  171.

The  use  of  asphyxiating,  poisonous  or  other
gases  and  all  analogous  liquids,  materials  or  devices
  being  prohibited,  their  manufacture  and  importation
  are  strictly  forbidden  in  Germany.

The  same  applies  to  materials  specially  intended
  for  the  manufacture,  storage  and  use  of  the
said  products  or  devices.

The  manufacture  and  the  importation  into  Germany
  of  armoured  cars,  tanks  and  all  similar  constructions
  suitable  for  use  in  war  are  also  prohibited.


Article  172.

Within  a  period  of  three  months  from  the  coming
  into  force  of  the  present  Treaty,  the  German
Government  will  disclose  to  the  Governments  of
the  Principal  Allied  and  Associated  Powers  the
nature  and  mode  of  manufacture  of  all  Gxplosives,
toxic  substances  or  other  like  chemical  preparations
  used  by  them  in  the  war  or  prepared  by  them
for  the  purpose  of  being  so  used.

CHAPTER  III.
RECRUrTING  AND  MILTrARTY  TRALHNG.

Article  173.
Universal  compulsory  military  service  shall  be
abolished  in  Germany.
The  German  Army  may  only  be  constituted
and  recruited  by  means  of  voluntary  enlistment.

Article  174.

The  period  of  enlistment  for  non-Oommissioned
officers  and  privates  must  be  twelve  consecutive
Jears.

The  number  of  men  discharged  for  any  reason
before  the  expiration  of  their  term  of  enlistment
must  not  exceed  in  any  Fear  five  per  cent.  of  the
total  effectives  fixed  by  the  second  sub-paragraph
of  paragraph  1  of  Article  160  of  the  present
Treaty.

Article  175.

The  officers  who  are  retained  in  the  Army  must
undertake  the  obligation  to  serve  in  it  up  to  the
age  of  forty-five  years  at  least.

Officers  newly  appointed  must  undertake  to
serve  on  the  active  list  for  twenty-five  Consecutive
  years  at  least.

Ofticers  who  have  previously  belonged  to  any
formations  whatever  o  the  Army,  and  who  are  not
retained  in  the  units  allowed  to  be  maintained,
must  not  take  part  in  any  military  exercise
whether  theoretical  or  practical,  and  will  not  be
under  any  military  obligations  whatever.
