! Before 1881 the Master of the Rolls was a Judge of the High Court; by 44 and 45 Vict.
c. 68 he became Judge of Appeal.

? There is no Court of Chancery now, its former jurisdicetion was transferred to the High
court of justice, of which it is now the most important division. It has cognisance of matters
relating to the administration of deceased persons‘ estates, dissolutions of partnerships, and taking
of partnership and other accounts, redemption and foreclosure of mortgages, trusts, specifio performance
of contracts for the sale of real estate, and of contracts for leases, partition of real estate,
wardship and care of the estates of infants. The old Court of chancery was a court of equity. There
has now been a fusion of law and equity that all divisions of the High Court of Justice are now
enabled to grant equitable relief in cases where formerly they could not have done so, and equitable
rules are in all cases to prevail where is any conflict between the rules of equity and law.

® This court not only holds sittings in London, but goes on circuit in different parts of
the country, these sittings are known as Assizes. The dates of the Assizes are about middle of
January, beginning of June, and middle of October. The autumn assizes are for criminal
business only.

* By the Bankruptcy act of 1883 jurisdietion in Bankruptcy was handed over to the
Supreme Court.

s5 These three divisions were fused into one court in 1875.

° Established by 7 Ed. VII, c. 23.

?  The  Lord  Mayor’s  Court  is  a  police-court;  the  L.M.  is  ex  officio  a  justice  of  the  Peace;
as he is not a lawyer by training the chief legal work is really done by the Recorder and Serjeant.
Aldermen too are Justices of tlıe Peace ex officio.
