— 532 — Regierungen in den vom Golf von Guinea nach dem Innern sich erstreckenden Gebieten betreffen und deren theilweise Erledigung bereits durch die deutsch-englischen Abkommen vom 29. April/7. Mai 1885, 27. Juli- 2. August 1886, 1. Juli 1890 und 14. April 1893 erfolgt ist, namens ihrer Regierungen folgendes Ab- kommen getroffen: Artikel 1. Das vorerwähnte Abkommen vom Jahre 1886 hatte vereinbart, daß die Grenzlinie bis zu einem am Benusfluß im Osten und in der unmittelbaren Nähe der Stadt Yola zu bestimmenden Punkt laufen sollte, welcher sich nach vorgenommener Untersuchung praktisch als geeignet zur Festsetzung der Grenze her- ausstellen würde. In Ausführung dieser Bestimmung wird dieser Punkt nunmehr, wie folgt, festgelegt: Von dem Endpunkt der in dem Abkommen vom Jahre 1885 vereinbarten Grenzlinie, welcher am rechten Ufer des Alt-Calabar= oder Croß-Flusses ungefähr auf dem 9° 87 ösllicher Länge von Green- wich belegen und auf der englischen Admiralitätskarte als „Rapids“ bezeichnet ist, folgt die Grenze einer geraden Linie, welche auf den Mittelpunkt der heu- tigen Stadt Yola zuläuft. Von dlesem Mittelpunkt aus wird eine Nichtlinie nach einem am linken Ufer des Benueflusses gelegenen Punkt gezogen, welcher fünf Kilometer unterhalb des Mittelpunkts der Haupt- einmündung des Flusses Faro liegt. Von dem letzt- genannten Punkte aus soll südlich des Benneflusses die Peripherie eines Kreises, dessen Mittelpunkt mit demjenigen der heutigen Stadt Yola zusammenfällt und dessen Nadius die vorerwähnte Richtlinie bildet, beschrieben und bis dahin fortgesetzt werden, wo sie die vom Alt-Calabar= oder Croß-Fluß gezogene ge- rade Linie trifft. An diesem Treffpunkt biegt die Grenze von jener geraden Linie ab und folgt der Peripherie des Kreises bis zu dem Punkt, wo dieselbe den Benusfluß erreicht. Dieser Punkt am Benuefluß soll von nun an als der Punkt im Osten und in unmittelbarer Nähe der Stadt Yola betrachtet werden, dessen Fesllegung in dem Abkommen vom Jahre 1886 vorbehalten war. Artikel 2. Die im vorhergehenden Artikel bestimmte Grenze soll nach Norden hin in folgender Weise fortgeseßt werden: Von dem im vorigen Artikel festgelegten Punkte am linken User des Benueflusses wird eine Linie gezogen, welche den Fluß überschreitend in gerader Richtung zu dem Schnittpunkt des 13. Grades öst- licher Länge von Greenwich mit dem 10. Grade nörd- licher Breite läuft. Von diesem Punkte wird die Grenzlinie in gerader Richtung nach einem Punkte am Südufer des Tschadsecs weitergeführt, welcher 35 Minuten östlich von dem Meridian des Mittel- punkts der Stadt K# belegen ist; dies entspricht der the territories under the influence of their respec- tive governments in the region extending into tbe interior from the Gulf of Guinea, which question bas already been partially determined by the Anglo-German Agreements of the 291b April/vth May 1875, 27td July/22d August 1886, July 12 1890, and April 14 ½ 1893, have come to the following Agree- mee#nt on behalf of tbeir respective Governments. Article I. The above quoted Agreement of 1886 having stipulated tbat the point where the boundary shall reach the River Benue shall be fixed to such a Point to the East of, and close to Tola, as may be found on examination to be practically suited. for the demarcation of a boundary, that point shall be fixed as follows: The boundary drawn from the point on the right bank of the Old Calabar or Cross River, about 9° 8 of longitude East of Greenwich, marked- „Rapids“ in the English Admiralty Chart referred to in the ubove quoted Agreement of 1885, sball follow a straight line directed towards the centre of the present town of Tola. From that centre a mensuring line shall be drawn to #poiont on tbe lelt bank of the River Benue five kilometres below the centre of tbe main month of the River Faro: from the latter point the circumference o- a eirele — the centre of which is that of the present town of Tola, and the radius of which is the aforesaid mensuring line — shall be described, south of the Benue, continuing till it shall meet the straight. line drawn from the Old Calabar or Cross River. The boundary deflecting from that straight line eat this point of intersection, shull follow the cir- cumference of the circie till it shall arrive at tbe point where the circumference reaches the Benue. This point on the Benue shall henceforth be accep- ted as the point to the East of, and close to Tola, mentioned in the Agreement of 1886. Article II. The boundary determined in the preceding Article, shull be continued northward as follows: 4 line shall be drawn from the point on tbe left bank of the Rirer Benue fiked in that Article, which, crossing the River, shall go direct to the point where the 130 degree of longitude Eust ol Greenwich is intewected by the 104 degreo olf North latitude. From that point it shall go direct to a point on the Southern shore of Lake Chad situnted 35 minutes Enst of the Meridinn of the centre ol the town of Kuka, this being the distance between the Meridian of Kuka and the 14 Meri- dian Enst of Greenwich mensured on the Map publishoed in tho German Kolonialatlas of 1892.
