sit firmly on land at Port Arthur — and above every thing — Russia’s
borders touch the Afghan frontier! And England should not forget this!
I am glad, that the Cretan affair is at last nearing its end. You know the
reason, why Russia had to take such a prominent part in its solution
— atthe risk of damaging our good and cordial relations with Turkey —
the fear of another Power establishing itself on the island and of course
the wish to put a final stop to the constant bloodshed. There was no
other way of settling the question than sending George as High Com-
missioner of the four Powers — itis a radical measure, but therefore the
only one in my opinion. Our troops shall remain there as long as England
keeps her’s on the island. We have both spent a most enjoyable time
here; the autumn has been a real summer to us who come from the
north. One does feel so well being out of doors all day, riding, playing
lawn-tennis etc. and not having to receive daily tiresome ministers.
Still they do not forget to belabour me with hills of papers, that I get

Während unserer Orientreise hatte sich der Faschoda-Streit zwischen
England und Frankreich abgespielt. Im April 1898 hatte der Sirdar Herbert
Kitchener, derselbe, der während des Weltkriegs von den Wellen der Nord-
sce verschlungen werden sollte, ein harter, rücksichtsloser, aber energischer
Kriegsmann, die Verkörperung jener englischen bulldoggenartigen Tat-
kraft, die sich Indien und Südafrika unterwarf, die Derwische bei Atbara
aufs Haupt geschlagen. Ungefähr um dieselbe Zeit war der französische
Major Marchand von Abangki abmarschiert und hatte Faschoda am
oberen Nil besetzt. Es war der letzte schüchterne Versuch der Franzosen,
von ihrer früheren großen Stellung in Ägypten wenigstens einige kleine
Fetzen im Niltal zu retten. Es ging ihnen aber damit ähnlich wie im 18. Jahr-
hundert bei den Kämpfen um Kanada. Bei jedem kolonialen Zusammenstoß
mit England ist Frankreich immer wieder auf seine kontinentale Politik
zurückgeworfen worden. Als Kitchener von der Expedition Marchands
erfuhr, nahm er seinen Vormarsch nach Süden wieder auf und brachte den
um die Hälfte stärkeren Derwischen eine neue, vernichtende Niederlage
bei. Am 5. September besetzte Kitchener Chartum, drei Wochen später
hißte er die englische Flagge in Faschoda und forderte Marchand zur
Faschoda
